Trekking in Nepal can be done throughout the year. However, the best season for trekking in Nepal is Autumn, from mid September to early December. It’s the time when there’s best possible weather and visibility of the Mountains.
For all you wondering when to trek in Nepal , I’ve categorized the seasons considering trekking as follows:
Winter (December to February): Better to book hotels with good heating because it’s going to be really cold! Trekking to Annapurna Base camp and Thorung La pass and Everest region might not be a very good idea, due to heavy snowfall of course. But despite the weather, winter is regarded as the second best time to trek in Nepal as the sky is clear and it’s the perfect time to please your eyes with the view of the spectacular Himalayan range. Also, other activities like paragliding, bungee jumping and mountain biking can be enjoyed around this time of the year.
Spring (March to May): Spring is another season to be jumping into your trekking gears and heading towards an adventure in Nepal. It starts to get warm both at lower elevations and in the mountains. Varieties of wild flowers mainly Rhododendron (National flower of Nepal) makes the hillsides a daunting paradise for trekkers. There could be dust in the air, though, making the visibility of the mountains obscure.
Summer (June to August): Not fond of rain or thunderstorms? I suggest you stay home then, as its monsoon time in Nepal. With downpours 1-3 times a day, the trekking trails are often slippery, muddy and wet with a lot of leeches! There are often landslides. The only views you are getting are of the clouds blocking the mountains. However, those with plans for summer trekking in Nepal don’t have to be sad as there are plenty of rain -shadow areas in the trans-Himalayan region of Mustang and Dolpa.
Autumn (September to November): This is the best time for you to be trekking in Nepal. The weather is mild and you can get clear and mesmerizing Mountain views. There’s lush green vegetation and air cleared out of dust due to recent rains. Not only for trekking, it’s also Dashain time (the biggest festival) in Nepal. You are in for some wonderful surprises so, better book your flights early as Nepal is going to be a treat, the one you may have never tasted before.
Nepal is a great country for tourists. You get to experience a lot of things here, both entertaining and amusing. However, most of the tourists come to Nepal for trekking purpose. So, its essential, especially for them, to consider their time of arrival to avoid inconveniences. Otherwise, you’re most welcome here, at all time.
